Here's the short version: the three modes don't set resistance. They set rebound — and rebound helps you. Which means the highest setting is the easiest one, not the most effective one.

Why can't I feel a difference when I change the setting?

So if you're chasing a setting that feels distinctly heavier, changing modes won't get you there. Modes change how much help you get. What changes the load is how far you roll out and how long your body's lever gets.

Is the highest setting the hardest workout?
No — it's the easiest. Both sides on means maximum assistance, which suits people who are still learning the path, who can't yet control the return, or who need help getting back. Max rebound hands part of the return trip to the spring, which is a sound beginner design. It also means your core does less of the work.

Marketing calls it a resistance mode. Mechanically, it's an assistance mode. More rebound = more help = less work for you.

What does the Slide Fit patent actually cover?
It covers the ability to switch the rebound off — not any fitness result. This is the most misread thing about the patent, and the most useful thing an owner can know about it.
The BACKGROUND section is blunt about the motivation. In conventional reciprocating ab rollers, the restoring mechanism "cannot be disabled," and so "If the user needs an exercising device without the restoring force, he/she has to buy another exercising device."
That's the problem the whole patent exists to solve: letting one machine switch between assisted and unassisted. Claim 1 describes a mounting portion that is "selectively coupled" to the driving set — when coupled, wheel rotation drives the spring and stores energy; when not, the wheel is simply disconnected from the drive. Claim 3 adds that the coupling is made of protruding teeth meeting corresponding depressions.
Teeth into depressions means the engagement is binary — either meshed or not, with nothing in between. That's the structural reason there are three modes instead of infinite adjustment: two rebound units (claim 12 places one driving set on the first axle and one on the second), each either on or off. Which mode should I use?
Answer one honest question first: on the way back, are you pulling yourself in, or is the spring springing you in? If it's the spring, you still want assistance. If you can control the whole return yourself, you're ready for less.
Pick by what you can currently do, not by how fast you want results:
- Both sides on (max rebound): You're still finding your balance, you're nervous about rolling out, or your hips drop partway through. Use this to groove the movement path.
- One side on (less rebound): You control the return reliably, but you still need a little help at your longer positions to keep your back from sagging.
- Both sides off (unassisted): You can roll out and return without rebound while keeping your back from collapsing the whole way.

If it sags, that distance is past what your core currently controls. The fix is to shorten the roll-out — not to crank the rebound up and force a longer one. Rebound will pull you back.
