After a few months with a Wonder Core Slide Fit, most owners hit the same wall: the movement gets smooth, the roll-out gets longer, and then — it stops feeling like much. The instinct at that point is to crank the rebound up, because higher must mean harder.
It's the opposite. Rebound helps you, so progression means turning it off, not turning it up. And that's not our opinion — it's the reason this machine's patent exists at all.
Why is progression about turning the rebound off?
Because rebound's job is to help you return to the start, not to add load. Turning it up hands more of the return trip to the spring, so your core does less. The only direction that makes the movement harder is less assistance — toward both sides off.

The machine's US Patent 11,033,768, "Restoring mechanism and exercising device", states rebound's role plainly. Describing how these mechanisms work, it says the restoring mechanism is "restored to assist the user to return to his/her original posture." The patent's verb is assist.
More telling is why the patent was filed. Its BACKGROUND section notes that in conventional reciprocating ab rollers the restoring mechanism "cannot be disabled" — so a user who wants to train without rebound "has to buy another exercising device." The entire invention is about letting one machine do both.

Am I ready to turn the rebound off?

Judge it by what you can do, not by how long you've been at it. Time served isn't a qualification; movement quality is. Move toward less assistance only when all three of these are true at once.
- You pull yourself back — the spring doesn't throw you back. You can control the speed of the entire return and stop anywhere along it.
- Your back doesn't sag on the way out. From start to your furthest point, your hips don't drop toward the floor. If it sags, that distance is beyond what your core currently controls.
- You can hold a pause. Stop at any point in the roll-out and you don't keep drifting forward. Holding means you're driving the movement, not momentum.
None of those is "do X reps" or "train for Y weeks." That's deliberate. This article will not hand you a week-by-week switching schedule, because no research supports a universal timeline — and inventing one would only push you to a harder setting while your back is still sagging. You have the criteria. Your body sets the date.
How do I make it harder if I'm not ready to switch?
Change your roll-out distance before you change your mode. Distance is what actually sets the load — the work comes from your body's lever, not from the spring.
From easiest to hardest, without touching a setting:
- Shorten the roll-out: Go only as far as you can hold your back steady, then return. The most direct way to reduce load.
- Lengthen the roll-out: Add a little distance at a time, as long as nothing sags. A longer lever means more torque for your core to resist.
- Slow the return: Even with rebound on, you can fight it and come back slowly instead of letting it carry you. This discounts the spring's help.
- Pause at your furthest controlled point: Hold briefly before returning.

None of that requires a mode change. Earn the distance first, then remove the help — not the other way around.
What can I do with the rebound turned off?
With rebound off, it's an unassisted four-wheel core board — and the patent itself describes three distinct ways to use the machine, two of which don't involve the handles at all. Most owners have never tried them.
In the passages covering FIG. 14 through FIG. 16, the patent describes:
- Holding the handles — here it is "served as an abdominal exercising device," the ab-roller use everyone knows.
- Resting your body on the carrier — here it is "served as a balance exercising device."
- Standing on the carrier with the rebound disabled — the patent's words: "the user can stand on the carrier and the exercising device is served as the skateboard when the restoring mechanism is disabled."

That third one explicitly requires the rebound to be off — the only place in the entire patent where a use is tied to a specific setting. Which means "both sides off" isn't just the hard setting. It's the precondition for a different category of use.
It also explains the "30+ exercise variations" on the box. This was never a one-position ab wheel: the board itself (the patent calls it a carrier, and notes it may be rectangular, circular, or oval) is a platform you can brace on or stand on. If the only thing you've ever done is grip the handles and roll, you've been using about a third of the machine.
What changes once the rebound is off?
The return is where you'll notice it. With no spring helping, you have to pull yourself back to the start under your own power. Most people discover their honest roll-out distance is much shorter than they thought — that's the range the assistance had been covering for.
So on your first unassisted session, deliberately shorten the distance and treat it as a restart. That's not regression; it's your real starting point once you've given back the help you were borrowing. The same rule still governs everything: if it sags, it's too far.

Patent examiners assess novelty and non-obviousness of a mechanism, not fitness outcomes. This machine has a genuine US invention patent whose claims match the hardware precisely — granted in 2021, with priority to Chinese application CN 201821371905.X filed August 24, 2018. That's true, and it's verifiable. But "has a patent" and "works for your goals" are separate claims, and we won't pass one off as the other.
Your progress comes from how far you roll, how well you control it, and how consistently you show up. Not from the patent.
